🌴 Post Holiday Reflection - Nature vs Nurture
Context
I returned from my trip to the Philippines and had a few reflections, prompting me to write this post.
My parents migrated from the Philippines to Sydney where I was born and raised. Vacationing in the motherland provided a glimpse into the alternative life if I grew up there. Which brought a revitalised appreciation of my life.
Reflections
1. Your environment impacts your potential
All humans around the world have the same potential. Depending on our environment and stimulus we can compete on the same mental and physical panes. This concept is so fascinating to me! Fundamentally, a child in a third-world country has the same capability as a child in a first-world country with generations of education.
I consider myself in Australia very blessed but do take it for granted. I grew up with education and money freedoms - providing an advantage in the modern global economy.
2. Work and reward are relative to your environment
People in the Philippines need to work so much harder for a lifestyle we enjoy. The cost of living is lower, however, in global terms, the same work is paid less. It is relatively easy for me to take a holiday in the Philippines compared to a Filipino taking a holiday in Sydney. Is life unfair? I would say yes. It generally always is, but it is a reason to fight to put yourself in a new environment. Life rewards action-takers who adapt - and these rewards can last for generations.
Action point
In summary, our environment matters. Evidenced by the macro environments of first and third-world nations. But even more important, the microcosms you exist in as well - family, friends, co-workers, clients, health, information and media will have a direct impact on your internal economy. How are we making steps to migrate to a better economy?
In taking action I hope to be more deliberate with whom I spend my time; work towards creating an environment conducive to growth; say no to people that drain my energy and time; and help others reach the next level. Cheers to a thriving world in 2023!
